Landed Properties
From good-class bungalows, the smaller detached houses
(typically newer, and as a result of sub-division), the semi-detached
homes as well as strata homes which combine the feel of living on a
landed property with the convenience of condominium development, landed
properties is a lifestyle- and, as this property cycle would have it-
the blue chip investments of real estate.
Good class bungalows- a closely watched trend as it's
typically seen to be a precursor to more general trends in real estate
purchases- purchased by savvy investors and thankfully spared the
speculation that high-end apartments were subjected to, reflect varying
aesthetics, from cutting edge, modern design to modern tropical
interpretations.
The detached houses, limited to certain neighbourhoods,
are typically modern in design and is a relatively new genre of housing-
a byproduct of the need for exclusivity and privacy for private
properties and the tight supply of land in Singapore.
The colonial black and white bungalow- falling under
the governments conservation laws and fetishized today for its
staggeringly large grounds, green surroundings and
Covetable for its history and luxuriant grounds, these black and white
houses offer a large garden unafforded by any other bungalows in
Singapore- along with a large dose of history and surrounding greenery.
A historical relic, these colonial structures were built with an
understanding of tropical climates, allowing for a good ventilation and
a flow of space. Most of these houses however, come only with 3
bedrooms, with a separate outhouse, previously used as the amah's or
chauffeur's rooms.
Whilst the place and relevance of colonial architecture in post-colonial
days have been debated, much of the desirable factors of these houses
today are not so much for its colonial significance as its understanding
of tropical climates and the scandalously large garden space.
Having been retrofitted by a local award-winning architectural firm, the
better black and whites come fitted with a walk-in wardrobe, standalone
claw baths, his and hers sinks and beautiful wooden floorings.
